Well you definitely need to Stage Zero it. Plugs & wires, cap & rotor, set the valve lash, seafoam, filters, injector cleaner and an Italian tune-up. Check for vacuum leaks, replace the hoses and be sure the tees aren't cracked. Check for vacuum leaks at the injector seals too, and especially at the accordion hose between the throttle body and AMM. Do the V-belts, timing belt and idler while you're at it, change all three mounts and check your U-joints & center bearing.
'84s are funny in that they're a 1 year only fuel and ignition system, and I think a 1 year only distributor too. If your AMM or ignition computer die, consider upgrading the whole system to LH2.2 or 2.4.
The surging idle could be a sticky idle controller, carb cleaner works in there. If the accordion hose is cracked (likely), it could easily explain your running issues. Start there, worry about mechanicals later.
