This is a public service announcement. Don't tighten the water pump bolts to the torque spec listed in the Haynes manual for the following engines (B21,B23,B230 - basically all slanted redblocks). The Haynes has listed the torque spec as 16 ft/lbs. The fastener is (or should be) an M6 coarse thread flange head bolt (with flange nuts on the two studs). These fasteners are 8.8 grade and have a torque rating of 7 ft/lbs (dry). I managed to snap a number over the weekend trying to hit the torque spec that was listed.
Also, the bolts that are shipped with the IPD GMB water pump do not have a grade specification. Throw them away and replace with the proper bolts. If you can't find a flange head bolt (and you won't find one around usually unless you're lucky (sometimes I've found them at Canadian Tire of all places). Then replace with a standard bolt and a hardened washer. Standard washers deform as the pump casting has oversized holes.
This is the end of my public service announcement.
